Guilt is good

Changing things in your favour will make you feel guilty. That’s a problem that stops many of my patients in their tracks and prevents them from creating enduring change in their lives.

Well, my friends, I’ve got news for you: guilt is good. In fact it is essential. If a newly recovered patient of mine tells me she is feeling guilty about the changes she is making and the demands she is putting on to others, I go ‘Hurrah!’ That means she is making the changes she needs to, in order to forge a life for herself that is sustainable and capable of producing happiness in the long run (for herself and those around her). But if guilt is good, resentment is bad. If you find yourself feeling resentment, you are not making the changes you need to or sufficiently asserting yourself.

Imagine depression as a dark room: there is only one way out to the bright garden of health and happiness – and that is through a doorway marked ‘Guilt’.
